| Dedicated to Bauernhoffen "Best in Blacks" By Fredric A. and Henrietta Bauer |
For us, the Bauernhoffen story began back in the 1980's with the purchase of what soon came to be a central member of our family. A solid Black German Shepherd we named Sheba, daughter of Bauernhoffen's Rex and Bauernhoffen's Rhapsody. She was the Great, Great Grandaughter of Oden. Sheba was from the Bauernhoffen's 5R litter. She was also half sister to Adam. Even that far back, the Bauernhoffens had been raising their "Best in Blacks" for the better part of 40 years. A 5R litter means that Henri had gone through the alphabet 5 times and was on R. She named the litters by letters of the alphabet. Fredric told us a story about how Henrietta came to love these dogs so. Everyone called her Henri for short. Henri was introduced to the breed by Fredric when she was 18 years old in New York City. Fredric had a big black male shepherd that he had brought to America from the Black Forest in Germany, and the dog was in the car with her when an attacker approached the car. He was scared off by the dog. She became an instant lover of the breed, and raised shepherds until she was well up into her 80s. Her death in 2003 was a shock to us all. This is a picture of our beloved Sheba. She was always very healthy all her life, and died of natural causes, at home, at age 13 Years. It was a terrible loss for us. Sheba was followed by several other Bauernhoffen dogs for us down to the present day. Once Fredric died several years ago, Henri was faced with caring for all the dogs by herself, and finally it all became too much, at her advanced age. She told us in 2002 she was going to have to stop, even though she didn't want to. She hand picked a Male (Emperor Wu), and a Female (Sarah), for us so we could continue the line. We cannot look at these wonderful dogs, and their offspring with their excellent temperament without thinking of this wonderful lady. Every puppy is the same as the one before in every respect. She had ultimately perfected the "Best in Blacks" bloodline. |
